William and Mary Drop Front Desk
This 17th century walnut burl, small drop front desk opens to reveal a beautifully painted tableau of a palace in the background with maidens in a garden in various poses, some with flowers, one with a sheaf of wheat, one with a basket of fruit, one with a lute, one with a mirror. Surrounding them are animals, ordinary and exotic, a snail, a rabbit, a camel and so forth. The drop front is covered in brown, tooled leather. The back of the desk is finished in the same burlwood as the front. The handles are original.
